Totley in World War 1

The three parishes in our area, Totley All Saints, Abbeydale St. John's and Dore Christ Church each have their own War Memorial, although some names of the fallen are common to more than one. In addition there are commemorative Rolls of Honour in Totley Rise Methodist Church, Dore and Totley United Reformed Church and Abbeydale St. John's which record the names of those who served and survived the Great War.

It is our intention to tell the life stories of all of these people. We would have preferred to dedicate a separate page to each one but that has not been possible as there is a finite limit on the number of pages to our website. For some servicemen there is a great deal of information, for others very little. The great majority of World War One service records were destroyed by enemy action during World War Two and most of those that survived the bombing were damaged by the subsequent fire.

Some of the men had connections with our area that go back many generations whilst others had but a short time here. They may have been born here and then moved away, or they may have married a local woman, or simply gone to a school in our area. Whatever the connection, the purpose of these stories is to keep memories of these men alive.
