Hurlfield School Grammar School
We are especially grateful to Sylvia Smith (nee Revill) for pointing out that the collection of school photographs that were given to us last year following the death of Avril Critchley were of Hurlfield Grammar School for Girls, not Abbeydale School as we had labelled them. The two schools were adjacent to each other and Hurlfield was renamed Grange Grammar School in the 1950s.
Sylvia now lives in Grimsby but when she attended Hurlfield, she lived on Rowan Tree Dell. She tells us that she remembers many of her teachers including Miss Beale (for geography), Miss Evans (maths), Miss Frost (French), Miss Luspay? (German), Miss Pogden (history), Miss Rodgers (music), Miss Walker (English), and the headteacher, Miss Read. Sylvia became a teacher herself in later life and had responsibility for English Language Development, and 'Special Needs'.
Jean Moore was a particular friend and Sylvia remembers Olwen Smith being a talented pianist who was occasionally allowed to play in the music lesson. She could rattle off, " The Rustle of Spring", at the drop of a hat in 1949. Sylvia, Jean and Olwen are all pictured above on this Form 2G class photograph from that year.
Sylvia would love to hear from anyone from Hurlfield who remembers her. Please write to us at our email address at the top of this page and we will be delighted to put you in touch.
