Nurse Jessop

Nurse ("Nanny") Jessop

I enclose a rather poor photocopy of Nurse Jessop, local nurse and midwife for Totley. She delivered my mother and uncle and was also the family's nurse. She lived at the bottom of Lemont Road. My family lived at Victoria Gardens, Glover Road where my great grandpa, James Gledhill, had a market garden. They later moved to 85/87 Baslow Road where the market garden continued up to the top of Mickley Lane.

Dore and Totley District Nursing Association.-- At a committee meeting held on January 8, Nurse Jessop was engaged as Nurse for the Association. It was suggested that a minimum payment of 2d. for each visit should be made for ordinary cases, but no charge to persons in receipt of Parish relief; for maternity cases a charge of £1; for night attendance, 10s. 6d.; for special day attention, a mutual charge to be arranged between the parties concerned, the doctor and the nurse. All monies paid for the services rendered by the nurse goes to the funds of the association. Application for services of the nurse to be made at her residence, Marlborough Villas, Grove Road.

For the efficient working of the scheme, a sum of about £200 per annum is required. Collectors for the Dore and Totley districts have been appointed, and the committee ask for a generous response. Mrs. Colin Thompson is the collector for Bradway Bank, Totley Rise, and Heatherfield. Mrs. A. J. Foulstone for New Totley, Green Oak, Totley, and Totley Bents.
