1763 Enclosure Document

TOTLEY LAND ENCLOSURE

This is a transcription of an undated document [circa 1763] held by Nottingham University and from the archive of Lord Middleton. It appears to be a summary of events in the Totley area during 18thcentury, informing Lord Middleton, who was wishing to enclose an area of land around Totley.

It had been recognised that the practices of strip farming and common land rights were inefficient and enclosure would allow the containment of livestock and/or crop rotation, which would in turn increase food production for the growing population of England.
