Census Strays

Census Strays are people who were born in one place but who subsequently appear elsewhere in census records. We have transcribed in full the census returns for Totley, Totley Rise and Dore. People listed on this page were born in Totley but are not in our transcriptions. They may have been living, working or studying elsewhere or just away from home on the night the census was taken. A few were in hospitals, workhouses and gaols.

The list of names is unlikely to be complete as we have indentified potential strays using Find My Past, by searching on Birth Town and then eliminating individuals who still live locally, and also mistranscriptions. It is possible to find strays in only 6 of the 8 censuses. The odd ones out are the 1841 Census, which did not record birth place, and the 1871 Census where the Find My Past transcription does not record Totley as a searchable location.

The index below shows the surname, forenames or initials, title (for married women only), gender, approximate year of birth (bc. = born circa), and town, county and sometimes place where individuals were recorded on census night. Following that, within square brackets, are the year of the Census and the record number in the accompanying PDF and XLS Census files which give additional information such as occupation.
