Housecraft College

Totley Hall Training College of Housecraft, 1955

Ownership of Totley Hall passed to Sheffield Council in 1949 and the hall was opened as the Training College of Housecraft on 11 September 1950. By 1963 the purpose of the college had changed to training primary school teachers when it became known as the Totley Hall College of Education.

We are very grateful to Pauline Jackson for writing to us and sending us an original panoramic photograph of the staff and students. Pauline's letter is reproduced below.

I enclose a photograph of Totley Hall Training College taken in 1955. I have circled my late mother-in-law on a photocopy. Her name was Miss Kathleen Holden (I think she was known as Kay although I only knew her as Kath). She was born in Formby, Lancashire in 1919 and in 1953 she was teaching at Barnstable Girls Grammar School, so she could not have been at the college long before the photograph was taken. She was my late father-in-law's second wife so I did not know her until 1970. I hope this is of interest to you.

Yours sincerely

Pauline Jackson

If you were a student of the college around this time, you might like to download a large version of the photograph and write to us with your memories of the people and the events of the time.
