Oral History

Everyone has a story to tell about their life which is unique to them. Some people have been involved in momentous historical events like the Second World War, or have lived adventurous or extraordinary lives; but many of us haven't. Oral historians regard all life experiences as significant and worthy of preserving on record.

Historical documents and books can't tell us everything about our past. Often they concentrate on famous people and big events, and tend to miss out ordinary people talking about their everyday lives. But now these ordinary voices can be recorded and preserved for future generations to listen to.

In our archive of recordings we have accounts of teenage nights out in the 1950's; childhood memories of a war-time night in an air raid shelter; the cheating that went on at the local produce show....... and much more.

As well as the full oral history recordings, we have extracted some short stories to give you a taster. We hope you enjoy them and are encouraged to download the full recordings which typically last for about an hour.
