Queen Victoria's Visit to Sheffield, 1897
Queen Victoria's Visit to Sheffield, 1897
Queen Victoria made a visit to Sheffield on 21 May 1897. It was the first visit to the city by a reigning sovereign. The occasion was the official opening of Sheffield's new town hall which had been designed by the the London architect E. W. Mountford and constructed between 1890 and 1897. The visit was one of many Queen Victoria made to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee. It lasted for just two hours before her train left from a special platform outside Cammell's works to convey the Queen to Scotland where she would drive to her home at Balmoral.
This Official Programme is printed on very thin paper and is very fragile. It was lent to us by Eileen Ferguson and belonged to her parents.
